The plan included severe cuts in public spending and consequently in services for citizens. Banks were put under surveillance and long queues were created at ATMs where daily withdrawals were severely restricted. Long days of popular mobilisation then began in protest against the government of George Papandreou (Pasok), who decided to resign.
